Healthcare in the USA: Are we ready for reform once again?

Six years after the Affordable Care Act was signed into law, the US still provides the world's most expensive healthcare with the poorest public health outcomes of any industrialized country. Now in an election year, healthcare has returned to the public eye, with former Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders having made universal care a central part of his platform, calling for comprehensive healthcare for everyone within our borders. Is this plan feasible? Is it affordable? Is it desirable?

Dr. Donald Berwick, former administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Dr. John Kitzhaber, past governor of Oregon, Dr. Alisha Moreland-Capula, professor of public psychiatry @ OHSU and Dr. Paul Gorman (moderator), Assistant Dean for Rural Medical Education @ OHSU spoke on August 1, 2016, in a forum in Portland co-sponsored by the City Club of Portland, Health and Public Safety Issue-Led Forum, and the Oregon Physicians for a National Health Program.

This hour and a half discussion and question/answer format was well-executed and covered some relevant questions about healthcare reform in the US with an emphasis on Oregon’s version. All three speakers agreed that healthcare is a fundamental right and should be affordable, accessible and adequate but the emphasis and how to get there differed slightly among the panelists.
